How to automate your car insurance renewal reminders

A practical way to automate car insurance renewal reminders so a comprehensive, third-party or CTP policy never lapses, without another calendar entry to forget.

Car insurance is the policy Australians are most likely to hold and most likely to let lapse. Comprehensive, third-party property, CTP (green slip in NSW) and roadside assistance often renew on different dates from different insurers, and each renewal comes as a separately styled email that is easy to miss in a busy inbox.

Why one calendar reminder isn't enough

A single reminder on the day the policy renews leaves no time to compare quotes, update the insured driver list, or query a premium jump. And if the insurer changes the renewal date (which happens after a claim, a mid-policy change, or a switch of insurer), the reminder no longer matches reality.

What a good automation looks like

  • Reads the renewal date from the insurer's own email. If a human has to type it in, it will get out of date.
  • Sends more than one reminder. Around a month out, two weeks out, and a few days out, so a single missed email doesn't mean a lapsed policy.
  • Handles every car and every insurer in one place. Household with two vehicles and different insurers? One vault, one reminder stream.
  • Keeps the renewal PDF attached. When the reminder fires, the full policy schedule is one tap away.
Insuro does this end-to-end for car insurance renewals. Forward the renewal email from NRMA, AAMI, Allianz, Budget Direct, Youi, RACV or any Australian insurer to your private@insuro.com.auaddress and reminders schedule themselves. Free during our beta.

What to check at each renewal

  • Agreed vs market value. Insurers often bump agreed value each year. It's worth checking against what the car is realistically worth.
  • Named-driver list. A driver added mid-year sometimes falls off at renewal.
  • Excess and premium change. Most renewals list last year's premium. A big jump is often negotiable, or worth a comparison quote before it auto-renews.

Getting started

Start with whichever car policy renews next. Get it into a system that reads the renewal date directly from the insurer's email, then add the rest as each renewal comes around. Within a year every vehicle is captured, and lapsed car insurance stops being a risk you have to remember to manage.
