1. Record the renewal deadline
Find the expiry date and time, the payment due date and any instructions about automatic renewal. These may be different. If anything is unclear, ask your insurer or broker rather than assuming a reminder means the policy has renewed.
Set a personal reminder early enough to review your documents and a second reminder before the payment deadline. Insuro renewal reminders use the dates recorded in your vault; check those dates against the schedule.
2. Collect the documents
- Current policy schedule and previous renewal notice.
- New renewal offer, premium and payment schedule.
- Applicable PDS or policy wording and any supplementary documents.
- Endorsements, special conditions and changes notified by the insurer.
- Notes of any outstanding questions you need the insurer to answer.
3. Compare this year with last year
Use the same billing period when comparing costs. A monthly amount multiplied by 12 may differ from an annual payment option. Check fees and the total payable, then use the premium increase calculator to work out the dollar and percentage change.
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Insurer and policy number | Match the renewal to the correct policy and insured item. |
| Period of cover | Record exact start and end dates and times. |
| Premium and fees | Compare the total for the same period. |
| Sum insured and limits | Record any changes and questions about whether details are current. |
| Excesses and exclusions | Look for changes, added conditions and optional benefits. |
| Payment and renewal method | Confirm the due date, method and whether renewal is automatic. |
4. Note changes in your circumstances
Make a list of changed details that may be relevant: address, vehicle use, property renovations, business activities or the people named on the policy. Ask the insurer what information it needs and how a change affects the terms. Seek appropriately qualified advice when you need help deciding what cover is suitable.
5. Confirm what happens next
If keeping the policy, follow the insurer's renewal and payment instructions and retain confirmation. If considering a replacement, check the proposed start time, acceptance, exclusions and waiting periods before deciding when to end existing cover.
Do not assume two policies provide identical protection because their names or premiums are similar. Read our guide to switching insurance without a gap and confirm the details with the insurers involved.

For further explanation of policy documents and renewals, see ASIC Moneysmart: how insurance works. Check your own insurer’s documents for the terms that apply to you.
6. File the confirmed renewal
Keep the new schedule, applicable wording, endorsements and payment confirmation together. Update your recorded dates and premium, and retain older documents that may be needed for a claim or other records. Ask your insurer or adviser about retention needs before discarding policy records.
In Insuro, forward the renewal email to your private vault address, then check the imported details. Use the total insurance cost calculator to see your combined insurance budget.
Frequently asked
When should I review an insurance renewal?⌄
Start when the renewal notice arrives, allowing time before the expiry and payment deadlines to check changes and ask your insurer questions. Confirm the actual deadlines on your policy documents.
Does an insurance reminder mean my policy has renewed?⌄
No. A reminder is a prompt to check the policy. Confirm renewal, payment and cover directly with your insurer and retain the new schedule.
What should I compare besides price?⌄
Compare the period of cover, insured details, sums insured, benefit limits, excesses, exclusions, optional benefits and payment fees. The policy wording and your circumstances determine whether a comparison is meaningful.
