Does car insurance cover hail damage?

Whether car insurance covers hail damage in Australia — comprehensive vs third party, storm embargoes when hail is forecast, how hail claims and write-offs work, and what to check in your PDS before storm season.

Australia's hail belt runs right through its biggest cities — Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne have all copped billion-dollar hailstorms. Whether your car is protected comes down to one thing: the type of policy you hold, and a few conditions buried in the PDS that matter enormously the week a storm is forecast.

Which policies cover hail

  • Comprehensive: yes — hail and storm damage to your own car is a standard inclusion.
  • Third party property (and fire & theft): no. These only cover damage you cause to other people's property (plus fire and theft of your car on the mid-tier option). Your own hail damage is not covered.
  • CTP / green slip: no. CTP covers injuries to people, never vehicle damage.

If your car is worth enough that a hail-written-off car would hurt financially, hail risk alone is a common reason people upgrade to comprehensive — particularly in storm-prone suburbs where off-street covered parking is not an option.

The catch: you cannot buy cover once the storm is coming

When severe weather is forecast, insurers routinely place a temporary embargo on new policies and cover upgrades in the affected area. Even without an embargo, policies typically exclude storm damage occurring within the first 48–72 hours of new cover. Cover for hail only works if you already had it before the storm was on the radar.

How a hail claim plays out

Hail is unusual because it damages thousands of cars at once, so insurers switch into catastrophe mode:

  • Assessment hubs. After a major storm, insurers often set up dedicated hail assessment centres and triage cars in bulk. Expect longer waits than a normal claim.
  • Repair or write-off. Paintless dent repair can fix light hail, but a serious storm dents every panel and repair quotes quickly exceed the car's value — older cars are frequently written off.
  • Payout basis. If the car is written off, you receive the agreed value or market value on your policy, minus any excess. This is where your sum insured choice really bites.

What to check in your policy before storm season

  • Whether you hold comprehensive cover on every car you own.
  • Agreed value vs market value — and whether the figure still reflects what the car is worth.
  • Your excess, since light hail damage may cost less than it.
  • Any conditions about where the car is normally parked — cover is priced on the risk address you declared.
  • Hire car and towing benefits, which vary widely after storms.

Know what you hold before the sky turns green

Most people find out what their car policy covers after the storm, digging through emails for a PDS while the insurer's phone queue runs hot. The time to check is before summer storm season — which means actually being able to find the policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does car insurance cover hail damage in Australia?

Comprehensive car insurance generally covers hail and storm damage. Third party property, third party fire and theft, and CTP do not cover damage to your own car from hail. Check your PDS for any storm-related conditions or excesses.

Can I buy car insurance when a hailstorm is forecast?

Usually not in a way that helps. Insurers commonly place temporary embargoes on new policies or upgrades when severe weather is forecast for an area, and most policies exclude damage that occurs within the first days of new cover taken out just before a known event.

Is hail damage usually a write-off?

Often, yes. Hail dents many panels at once, so repair costs escalate quickly and can exceed the car's insured value, especially for older cars. Whether you are paid out at agreed value or market value depends on your policy.

Does claiming for hail damage affect my no claim bonus?

It depends on the insurer. Hail is a not-at-fault weather event, but many insurers still count it as a claim for rating purposes. Check your PDS or ask before you claim, and weigh the payout against any excess and premium impact.
